Fall, the time to Get 'Em in the Ground!

Those of you who know me well, know one of my favorite sayings this time of year is, "Fall is a great season for gardening in Houston!" Our mild falls mean we are blessed with a second optimal planting time here on the Gulf coast. Fall is actually the best time to plant trees in Houston. As it gives trees an opportunity to put their energy into establishing their roots rather than growing leaves & branches. So if you've been wanting to plant a new tree, now is the time to do it.

Now is also an exciting time for you vegetable gardeners out there, as fall is the time for leafy greens in the garden! Here's a list of things you can plant through fall to receive a bountiful harvest through winter & early spring.

  • Collard Greens
  • Mustard Greens
  • Kale
  • Cabbage
  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • Carrots
  • Onions
  • Leeks
  • Kohlrabi
  • Tomatoes...Yes, tomatoes!
Now that's a bountiful crop!

America has a love affair with fresh garden tomatoes. I'm pretty sure it's the number 1 home-grown vegetable & we are lucky enough to have them for two seasons here in Houston. The key is to get them in the ground a few months before threat of freeze to get the most production. A freeze will take tomatoes out, so plant a few & enjoy them while you can this year and plant them in August or early September of next year.

In general, the vegetables I listed above can be planted through mid October. If you live around the Pearland area, Ray's Feed Store on Cullen & Joseph's Nursery on FM 1128 have veggie transplants. For Mid Town, Wabash Feed Store has a great selection of veggie plants for your garden.

We're expecting a nice cool front to come through by the weekend, so make the most of fall's wonderful weather & go out there & get 'em in the ground for fall!
