A Special Post for my Garden Kiddos!

Hey Kiddos! It seems like so long since I've seen you all! While we're all staying home, I really want you to get some gardening in because working in or just being in a garden is healing.

For more about what to do, here's a special message to all of you.

Every Friday, I am going to post an activity here on my blog for you all to try at home. I'd really love it if you'd share what you're doing in your gardens also. You can post a picture, video, or  just post a comment. It's up to you and your parents. Please make sure to get permission from your parents first! Here's your first activity.

Activity 1
Make a Garden Journal and Decide What to Plant

Your Garden Journal is probably at school, so here's how to make a quick and easy one here. There are lots of tutorials on making garden and nature journals on the Internet, so you can make a few different ones if you'd like. Here's mine:

  1. Fold a paper lunch bag in half.
  2. Fold 3-4 sheets of paper in half (hot dog style).
  3. Fold the sheets again (hamburger style).
  4. Cut the folded edges at the top, but not on the side.
  5. Slide the paper inside the folded bag, folded edge first.
  6. Staple the folded edge.
  7. Decorate your journal with whatever you have around the house. I used some artificial flower leaves and pictures I cut out from a seed catalog. I also punched holes on the edge and put some ribbon through.

Now decide what you are going to plant in your home garden, where you will plant it, and how you will get what you need. Write your plan in your new garden journal.

Here are a few things you can plant in April:
  1. Cucumbers
  2. cantaloupes
  3. Sunflowers
  4. Watermelons
  5. Eggplants
  6. Yellow & winter squash
  7. Zucchini
  8. Okra

Don't forget to share your ideas in the comments below. I'll be so glad to hear from you. Until next Friday, happy gardening!
