September is in full swing and the promise of fall is on the horizon. Fall and winter can sometimes be overlooked in the garden. But don’t forget that in the south, fall is a prime gardening season for us! While we might not have the fall tree foliage like our northern neighbors, we do have lots of flowers and oodles of veggies that love our cool seasons. As we anticipate fall and all its goodies, get your garden checklist ready, here are some things to do in your garden. Typically these are items to work on throughout the month of September but given the late heat you can carry through into October.

  • This is the perfect time to plant a new perennial garden. Temperatures will soon cool enough to give newly transplanted plants an opportunity get growing while it’s still warm, but without the stress of the blistering heat. Fall will give just enough time for plants to start growing, and winter will give them time to develop stronger roots as perennials are dormant for the season. So take advantage of the end-of-summer sales at the garden center to start the new bed you’ve been wanting.

  • Start perusing the web for specialty sales organized by specialty groups such as the Master Gardeners and various plant societies. These groups often have plants for sale that are not available in regular garden centers.
