Building a Terrarium
As the dog days of summer set
in you may want to move your gardening ventures indoors. What better way to do
this than to build a terrarium? This is a great activity to do with kids too,
but I must warn you building terrariums can become additive. The good thing is
that these miniature gardens can be made quickly and inexpensively, often using
things you already have at home.
To get started you’ll need
the following items:
·
A clear container
·
Gravel or sand
·
Charcoal
(optional)
·
Sphagnum moss
(optional)
·
Soil
·
Small plants
·
Scissors
·
Paper towels or
small paint brush
·
Spray bottle with
water
·
Decorations: miniatures
to create scenes, river rocks, pebbles, craft sticks, etc. (optional)
Choosing your container can
be lots of fun. Most likely you have one you can use at home. Get creative with
choosing containers. Think bottles, fish bowls, jars, etc. You can even upcycle
a two liter soda bottle into a planter. To use a soda bottle, cut off the bottom
half four-six inches from the bottom and then follow the steps below. To close
container, slide top of bottle over the bottom. If it is too tight, make a
small 1/2 inch slit at top of bottom wall. Full article
